How to Obtain Your Tennessee Marriage License
Before your ceremony, you’ll need a valid Tennessee Marriage License. Here’s what you and your partner need to know —
especially for Memphis / Shelby County residents:
1. Choose a County Clerk’s Office & Pre-Apply
You may apply for a license at any Tennessee County Clerk’s Office, regardless of where you live or where your ceremony will be held. Shelby County TN

2. Appear In Person (Both Parties)
Both applicants must appear in person together at the County Clerk’s Office to complete the license issuance. Shelby County TN
Be prepared to present a valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport, etc.). Shelby County TN
If you’re ages 18–20, you’ll also need a certified copy of your birth certificate. Shelby County TN

3. Fees & Premarital Course Option
The standard license fee is $97.50 in Shelby County. Shelby County TN
If you complete a state-recognized 4-hour premarital preparation course (and present the notarized certificate), the fee is reduced to $37.50. Shelby County TN
4. License Validity & Use
The license is valid immediately upon issuance — there’s no waiting period in Tennessee.
The license expires 30 days from issuance, so your ceremony must occur within that timeframe.
Once the ceremony is complete, the license must be signed (by you, your spouse, the officiant, and the witness if required) and returned to the issuing County Clerk’s Office for official recording.
